Containerships was established in 1966 by Finnish entrepreneur Veli Nordström. Since the early days, Nordström had a strong vision of containers changing the tide of short sea logistics. His previous company, AA-Lines, introduced the first plywood-lined, aluminium sea containers in Europe in 1962. In 1967, our first container vessel loaded with these containers sailed from Finland to the UK.

The 1980’s were a decade of expansion in container logistics. Between 1985 and 1990, Containerships developed into a leading short sea carrier emphasising the use of pallet-wide containers. In 1996, we introduced the 45’ Magnum container, offering equal capacity to a trailer and making container logistics even more competitive alternative to a traditional trailer transportation.

During the years, we have expanded widely throughout Europe. By 1994, Containerships was one of the first western logistic companies established in Russia with offices in St. Petersburg and Moscow. In 2006, Containerships acquired the Lithuania-based company Kursiu Linija and Lithuania, Latvia and Poland were added to the service network. In 2008, the network was enlarged to the port of Zeebrugge in order to offer a better access to the Belgian and French markets.

After developments in the lower Baltic Sea, Containerships extended further its network through the acquisition of Contaz Lines of Turkey in 2009.

Further development of our core transportation within Europe took place in June 2010 when we presence in Ruhr area, Germany. 2013 was highlighted with opening of the new office in Kiev, providing fast transportation solution to and from Ukraine by rail connections via port of Klaipeda and Riga. Lübeck office was established in 2014, when the port of Lübeck was added to the service network.

In 2017, Containerships added the Port of Gdynia in the Baltic service and the Port of Barcelona in the Mediterranean service. Same year, company’s own LNG refuelling station opened in Teesport, UK. In 2018, Norway was added to Containerships’ service network.

In November 2018, Containerships took a historical step and become part of world leading shipping line, CMA CGM group. Now, Containerships is part of CMA CGM’s Intra-European activities, and our customers will benefit from larger service offering than ever.

In head and tailwinds and for more than 50 years, Containerships has served its customers with the same mindset – we take care.
